The Appellate Division is Colorado’s prosecutorial authority at the appellate level of the criminal justice system. Division staff represent law enforcement when defendants appeal criminal convictions to the Colorado Court of Appeals and the Colorado Supreme Court through both written briefs and oral argument. They also represent the state in habeas corpus actions challenging state criminal convictions in the federal courts, extradition appeals, and in select civil appeals relating to property and bond forfeiture actions. In addition to their appellate litigation, Appellate Division attorneys share their expertise in criminal law issues with the state’s District Attorneys and regularly provide legal updates, informal advice and formal presentations for the state’s prosecutors.
