Attorney General Suthers Praises Supreme Court Decision Affirming Parolees Not Eligible To Vote -- 07/31/2006

DENVER – Attorney General Suthers today praised the Colorado Supreme Court’s unanimous ruling that a Colorado statute prohibiting parolees from voting does not violate the Colorado Constitution.

In May, the Denver District Court granted the Attorney General’s Motion to Dismiss filed on behalf of the Secretary of State. Judge Michael A. Martinez, in writing the order, noted that the U.S. Supreme Court and the Colorado Courts have historically held that a “term of imprisonment” also includes a period of parole.

Attorney General Suthers Announces State’s Largest Effort To Combat Methamphetamine Abuse -- 07/25/2006

DENVER – Attorney General John Suthers announced today the formation of the Colorado Methamphetamine Task Force, pursuant to HB 06-1145 passed earlier this year. The announcement was made following the Methamphetamine Task Force’s first meeting.

“Meth abuse in Colorado has risen to extremely dangerous levels,” said Attorney General Suthers. “The damage meth inflicts on our communities and economy is immeasurable. This Task Force is the state’s largest coordinated, comprehensive approach to address the scourge of methamphetamine abuse in Colorado.”

Attorney General Suthers Issues Statement Following The Supreme Court’s Modified Opinion On Initiative #55 -- 06/26/2006

DENVER – Today, the Supreme Court denied the petitions for rehearing submitted by the Attorney General’s Office and proponents of Initiative #55, choosing instead to make non-substantive revisions to their original opinion denying the Initiative a place on the November ballot.

Forty-Nine Attorneys General Join AG Suthers’ Call For Congress To Adopt National Standard For ISP Data Retention -- 06/22/2006

DENVER – In his capacity as chairman of the Criminal Law Committee of the National Attorneys General Association (NAAG), Colorado Attorney General John Suthers has called on Congress to adopt a national data retention standard for Internet Service Providers (ISP). Suthers sponsored a letter urging Congress to address data retention – a matter that law enforcement frequently cites as a major roadblock in their investigations of online predators. Attorneys General from forty-nine states and jurisdictions signed onto the letter.

Attorney General John Suthers Announces Arrest Of Fugitive In The Shooting Of Telecom Executive Jeff Garrett -- 06/20/2006

DENVER – Attorney General John Suthers today announced that Oscar Hoyos DeLaCruz was arrested for the murder of Jeffrey Rando Garrett, which occurred on May 14, 2005. DeLaCruz was arrested in Sinaloa, Mexico on June 15, 2006. Jeff Garrett, 37, of Aurora, was shot while hunting in the East Elk Creek area of Garfield County.
