DENVER – Colorado Attorney General John Suthers today released the following statement following Governor Bill Ritter’s veto of HB-1208:
“The Youth Offender System that Colorado’s District Attorneys worked to create following 1993‘s ‘Summer of Violence’ has been an extremely important part of our criminal justice system for 15 years. Since the implementation of YOS, violent juvenile crime has been in decline, a clear reflection of the system’s effectiveness.
“House Bill 1208 would have undermined the vital role that YOS has come to play in our state’s corrections system, putting public safety unnecessarily at risk. I sincerely applaud Governor Ritter’s veto of the bill.”
