Attorney General calls FTC report ‘an encouraging sign’ about Colorado consumers
DENVER — Colorado Attorney General John Suthers said today that a Federal Trade Commission report on participation in the federal Do Not Call Registry for the 2009 fiscal year indicates that Coloradans are highly informed about their rights under the program.
“The fact that Colorado has the highest registration rate in the federal Do Not Call Registry is an encouraging sign that Colorado consumers are highly aware of their rights and are taking advantage of this federal resource,” Suthers said. “Colorado’s high participation rate also highlights the vigorous consumer-education efforts our office and our partners have engaged in since the creation of the Do Not Call Registry.”
According to the report more than 3.8 million Coloradans, or 78,528 per 100,000 residents, had registered their phone numbers with the program as of Sept. 30. Between Oct. 1, 2008 and Sept. 30, 2009, Coloradans filed 29,342 complaints, or 594 complaints per 100,000 residents, with the federal registry, according to the report.
As of Sept. 30, the Colorado No Call Registry, which is separate from the federal registry, had more than 3.3 million Colorado telephone numbers registered with the program. Between, Oc. 1, 2008 and Sept. 30, 2009, Coloradans filed 4,363 complaints with the state registry.
“I would encourage any Coloradan not registered with the state and federal No Call registries to go online today and sign up,” Suthers said. “Telephone and telemarketing fraud, especially around the holidays, is one of the areas Coloradans can limit their exposure. Registering for the state and federal No Call registries can help diminish the amount of common telephone scams you and your family encounter.”
