DENVER — Colorado Attorney General John Suthers announced today the appointment of Melanie Snyder to head the office’s new Revenue & Utilities Section as deputy attorney general. In order to create better efficiencies and streamline operations, the Business & Licensing Section was divided into two sections: Business and Licensing (B&L) which remains headed by Deputy Attorney General Diana Black and Revenue & Utilities (R&U) now headed by Snyder. The Colorado Legislature approved the creation of the new deputy attorney general position this summer.
“While a First Assistant Attorney General, Snyder demonstrated leadership skills that are proving she is an outstanding choice to head the new Section and join my senior team,” Suthers said. “This restructuring is already creating a more client-focused experience for the State agencies we serve and establishes an appropriate span of control for both the B&L and R&U Sections.”
The R&U Section provides litigation and general counsel support to the Colorado Department of Revenue clients and the Property Tax Administrator and Property Tax Division within the Colorado Department of Local Affairs. R&U also provides litigation support to the litigation staff of the Colorado Public Utilities Commission (PUC).
The R&U Section now houses three Units: PUC Litigation, Revenue, and Conservation Easement Tax Credit. The B&L Section now houses six Units: Medical, Insurance, Real Estate, Financial & Health Services, Nursing & Dental Boards, and Agriculture & Regulatory Boards.
Snyder joined the Attorney General’s Office in 2008 after practicing commercial litigation in private practice. She was the general counsel and trial counsel for the State Board of Accountancy which licenses and regulates certified public accountants and public accounting firms. In 2010, Snyder began representing the Colorado Department of Revenue in tax litigation matters and was promoted to first assistant attorney general of the Conservation Easement Tax Credit Unit in January of 2012.
Snyder graduated from the University of San Diego School of Law and holds degrees in Political Science and Psychology from the University of Arizona.
