WILLIAM PAUL BUCKLEY SENTENCED FOR AUTO THEFT

DENVER - Colorado Attorney General John Suthers announced today that an Arapahoe County Judge sentenced William Paul Buckley (DOB: 05/10/84) to ten years of economic crime probation and 90 days in the county jail for a series of car thefts that occurred between September, 2010 and January, 2011.

Buckley pled guilty to Class Three Felony Theft after reaching an agreement with the prosecution in which he agreed to pay approximately $220,000 in restitution and faced up to ten years in the Colorado Department of Corrections. To date, Buckley has paid $50,000 in restitution thus far.

Buckley’s sentence stems from a four-count indictment filed in Arapahoe County District Court in January, 2012. The indictment charged Buckley with having operated a fraudulent automobile leasing scheme through a Boulder and Arapahoe County business called Lease Brokers. Buckley attracted victims to his business by promising that he would take over their existing car loans and leases and locate third parties who would be willing to assume responsibility for existing leases or purchase the vehicles. Once he obtained possession of vehicles in this manner, Buckley typically advertised and sold the vehicles to unsuspecting third parties for cash without notifying either the original victims or their lien holders and with no authority to transfer title. Buckley fled to Argentina in January, 2011 after taking possession of approximately eleven vehicles and accepting cash payments of approximately $160,000. Buckley returned from Argentina to face charges in October, 2012.

The indictment against Buckley was the result of a lengthy investigation conducted by members of the Attorney General’s Auto Theft Unit, The Colorado Department of Revenue, and multiple law enforcement agencies within the State of Colorado. The Attorney General’s Auto Theft Unit is funded through a grant from the Colorado Auto Theft Prevention Authority (CATPA).
