DENVER — Colorado Attorney General John Suthers announced today the appointment of Julie Ann Meade to head the office’s Consumer Credit Unit. In that capacity, Ms. Meade will serve as the Administrator of the Uniform Consumer Credit Code and the Colorado Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
Meade is an experienced attorney with expertise in regulatory and administrative law, criminal law, and government contract and procurement law. She most recently served as an Assistant Attorney General with the U.S. Virgin Islands Attorney General’s Office.
“Julie has the depth and breadth of experience to fulfill the mission of the Consumer Credit Unit,” said Suthers. “She has a proven record of working in complex areas of law and providing legal counsel and advice on a wide range of issues.”
The Consumer Credit Unit enforces nine state credit-related laws: the Uniform Consumer Credit Code (consumer finance), including the Consumer Equity Protection Act (predatory lending), the Deferred Deposit Loan Act (payday loans), the Rental Purchase Agreement Act (rent-to-own), and the Refund Anticipation Loans Act, as well as the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (collections), the Child Support Collection Consumer Protection Act (private child support collections), the Debt-Management Services Act (credit counseling and debt settlement), and the Credit Services Organization Act (credit repair).
Meade will report to Deputy Attorney General of Consumer Protection, Jan Zavislan beginning on May 20, 2013, and succeeds Laura Udis who left the office after more than 30 years of public service, 25 of those spent as Administrator. Meade has also served as the Chief Legal Counsel to the New Mexico Medical Board and was Deputy Superintendent and Chief General Counsel to the New Mexico Department of Regulation and Licensing in addition to serving as an Assistant Attorney General in New Mexico.
Meade received her B.A. in Political Science from American University and was on the Dean’s list at the California Western School of Law in San Diego where she obtained her Juris Doctor.
