DENVER – Today, the Supreme Court denied the petitions for rehearing submitted by the Attorney General’s Office and proponents of Initiative #55, choosing instead to make non-substantive revisions to their original opinion denying the Initiative a place on the November ballot.
As a result, Attorney General John Suthers issued the following statement following the Court’s refusal to reconsider Initiative #55:
DENVER – In his capacity as chairman of the Criminal Law Committee of the National Attorneys General Association (NAAG), Colorado Attorney General John Suthers has called on Congress to adopt a national data retention standard for Internet Service Providers (ISP). Suthers sponsored a letter urging Congress to address data retention – a matter that law enforcement frequently cites as a major roadblock in their investigations of online predators. Attorneys General from forty-nine states and jurisdictions signed onto the letter.
DENVER – Attorney General John Suthers today announced that Oscar Hoyos DeLaCruz was arrested for the murder of Jeffrey Rando Garrett, which occurred on May 14, 2005. DeLaCruz was arrested in Sinaloa, Mexico on June 15, 2006. Jeff Garrett, 37, of Aurora, was shot while hunting in the East Elk Creek area of Garfield County.

DENVER – Attorney General John Suthers announced today the indictments of ten defendants in a long-standing and prolific bingo scheme designed to defraud non-profits out of millions in bingo and pull-tab proceeds. The Statewide Grand Jury issued their indictment on June 2, 2006. Warrants for the ten defendants were issued yesterday.
DENVER – Attorney General Suthers today joined Gov. Owens at a Denver Boys & Girls Club as he signed HB-1011, which gives law enforcement additional tools to crack down on Internet predators. The legislation was the cornerstone of the Attorney General’s Safe Surfing Initiative, launched last year on May 25, 2005, in recognition of National Missing Children’s Day.

DENVER – Attorney General Suthers today praised the decision of the Denver District Court confirming that C.R.S. 1-2-103(4) does not violate the Colorado Constitution or the Equal Protection Clause by making parolees ineligible to vote. Denver District Court dismissed the case Friday, May 26 and granted the Secretary’s Motion to Dismiss.
